Introduction to Lamacoid labels

Lamacoid Labels — Overview

Lamacoid labels (also spelled Lamicoid) are engraved plastic nameplates used for industrial identification. The name originated as a brand and has since become a generic term for this type of laminated, engraved label.

How They Work

Lamacoid labels are made from multi-layer plastic sheet (typically 2 or 3 layers of acrylic). A laser or mechanical engraver cuts through the top layer to expose the contrasting color underneath, creating permanent, high-contrast text and graphics.

Key Characteristics

Engraved, not printed — the text cannot fade, peel, or smudge

Highly durable — resistant to UV, chemicals, abrasion, and moisture

Suitable for indoor and outdoor use — outdoor lifespan of 5+ years with no significant change; readability can last 20+ years

Standard thickness — usually 1/16 in (≈1.6 mm), with 1/8 in (≈3.2 mm) available

Wide color range — common combinations include white-on-black, black-on-white, and white-on-red

Mounting options — pressure-sensitive adhesive backing or mechanical fasteners (screws)

Common Applications

Electrical & industrial controls — legend plates on panelboards, switchgear, and control panels

Equipment & assets — machine nameplates, asset tags, motor labels

Safety & piping — warning signs, valve and pipe identification

Specialized industries — solar system component labels, oil and gas compliance tags
